Signs of abuse
The questions below can help you determine if your relationship is abusive. A greater number of “yes” answers indicates a higher likelihood of abuse.
Is your partner a person who:
Puts you down?
Humiliates or yells at you?
Treats you badly, blames, belittles you in front of the children or others?
Ignores or criticizes your opinions?
Comes on very strong? Wants to rush the relationship to the next level?
Is extremely jealous?
Isolates you and tries to keep you from friends, family or outside activities?
Has unrealistic expectations like expecting you to meet all their needs?
Blames you for their own behaviour or tells you that you are overreacting?
Controls your behaviour?
Controls your access to money?
Believes that women are inferior to men and should obey them?
Demands to know where you are at all times? Acts suspicious?
Is intimidating, for example using threatening body language, punching walls or breaking objects?
Has ever been cruel to animals?
Has ever maltreated or neglected children?
Threatens to hurt the children or take them away?
Acts unpredictably? Being sweet one minute and then exploding the next?
Physically hurts you or threatens to hurt or kill you?
Holds you against your will and keeps you from walking away or leaving the room?
Threatens to commit suicide if you leave?
