Shelter Services

Once a woman chooses to come to the shelter, she is assigned a counsellor who offers:

  • education on conjugal violence and related issues;
  • emotional support and therapy;
  • training in assertiveness and safety planning;
  • advocacy and referrals to community and other resources.

Residents also participate in groups and alternative therapies to complement the counselling process.

For mothers our goals include:

  • minimizing the impact of the abuse on their children;
  • alleviating some of the stress during their stay by offering respite through our volunteer program;
  • providing support services for pregnant women;
  • preparing for post shelter living.

For children, services in the shelter include:

  • individual counselling and play therapy;
  • safety planning and referrals.

When our residents leave, they remain a part of the Auberge Shalom family and they are welcome to use our Counselling & Resource Office for Follow-Up Services or to join any of our activities.
